Basic Sports Nutrition for Budding Athletes

Basic Sports Nutrition for Budding Athletes

Seeing those athletes during the Olympic Games makes most people excited about the games. It seems that their talent, athletic build, and popularity make them look like a superhero and people seem to admire them even more. Not only do they make their own country proud, but they inspire people around the world. However, not many people are aware of the sports nutrition that these athletes have to maintain.

Perhaps most would think that they only need to eat a balanced diet and an energy drink, whilst others may already know that they need to follow a tougher diet regime. Athletes and non-athletes need the same basic nutrition. The only difference is that athletes need a higher level of nutrition due to the effort they exert before, during, and after their event.

Eating a balanced diet, especially during breakfast, should be the top priority of every athlete. In this way, they can be certain that they will be getting the right quality of healthy products to be physically healthy for every sports event. Moreover, since energy is what they need to keep going to the highest level of their performance, they need foods that are also rich in carbohydrate, fats, and protein.

Almost everyone knows that carbohydrates are essential for energy. This is also the case for athletes. Carbohydrates immediately turn into other forms of sugar such as glucose and that is one of the ways where they get their required energy.

Though fats are more often regarded as bad for health, it is a vital element in sports nutrition. Stored fats serve as a cushion and insulator to other vital organs in the body. It is also used by the body as a form of energy that fuels an individual to continue an activity for a longer period. It is just that converting stored fats into energy takes a bit longer.

Finally, protein is required by athletes so that their body can repair muscles and tissues. Protein can also be used as fuel during endurance exercises. When protein is used this way, there may not be enough to repair the muscles and tissues.

Aside from taking foods rich in carbohydrate, fats, and protein and aside from maintaining a healthy diet daily, an athlete needs another essential thing to keep their performance level. Water is very important. Since they lose a lot of water through sweat and are exposed to higher temperature, they need to be hydrated more often.

Drinking adequate water throughout the day is essential. It is not however advisable to just drink a large quantity of water all at once. Drinking a sports drink on the other hand can also be helpful because it replaces electrolytes and other elements in an athlete’s body. This can be helpful if an athlete is in the middle of a training session.

To sum up all the sports nutrition needed by the athletes, they simply have to bear in mind to eat the right food, drink adequate amount of water, and supply the body with vitamins and minerals before, during, and after their training or the sports event.

MMA Supplement Review: Tapout’s Sport Nutrition Line

MMA Supplement Review: Tapout’s Sport Nutrition Line

Painted faces, arrogant attitudes, and loud clothing have defined the TapouT brand, and their success is unmatched in the world of MMA.  It’s hard to argue with the success of TapouT, who has created a line of clothing that is ubiquitous in the MMA world.  The tragic death of co-founder ‘Mask’, which rocked the MMA community, and showed how deeply loyal MMA fans are to this line of clothing.  TapouT, in its quest to perfect the MMA branding process, has stamped their name and logo on everything from wallets to socks to dog tags, and TapouT’s newest venture: sports nutrition.

TapouT’s blister rise to the top is becoming tarnished within the MMA fight community.  TapouT’s popularity has led to a mainstream acceptance of their brand, and their core-culture of fighters is diminisning as they become increasingly well known as a ‘poser’ brand within the sport.  Dedicated fighters are turned off by the mainstream acceptance and who can blame them; MMA was built on the underground mystique and mentality. Is the move into supplementation an attempt to regain the hardcore fight crowd, or is TapouT simply putting their logo on another crap product in an attempt to bulk up their annual revenues as they deepen their corporate pockets?

On April 28, 2009, TapouT announced its licensing agreement with Champion Nutrition to offer sports enthusiasts TapouT Sports Nutrition products. Under this relationship, Champion Nutrition will design, distribute and market the Tapout Sports Nutrition brand to all retailers in the United States and abroad.  Champion is a well-known nutritional supplementation company, however, their line of products is robust with everything from feminine weight loss to bodybuilding products.  Champion, and many other nutrition companies, have tried to capture a piece of the lucrative MMA supplement industry.  But, true fighters have seemed to gravitate to fighter specific companies, such as Atlanta based Brawl Nutrition.

The problem lies within the current products offered within the supplementation market in relation to the needs of fighters.  Of course, fighters are the most well rounded athletes of any modern sport, which creates a true problem for supplement companies.  Fighters require strength, endurance, power, weight loss or gain (dependant upon weight class).  There is no wonder pill that captures all of these athlete attributes into one supplement.  Nutrition companies still associate muscle and mass with MMA dominance; endurance and technique can be far superior to brute strength.  Just look at Roy Nelson’s dominance of muscled-up Kimbo Slice on TUF 10.  Roy looks like a sloppy, burger eating trucker, but his technique was far superior to the muscled up yet undertrained Slice.

At first glance TapouT/Champion Nutrition’s line of supplements looks mean and gritty with its black bottle and grunge label, but it is what’s inside these bottles that has the MMA fighters buzzing.  To start, the product line is vast, and the selection can leave a fighter with a mind numbing decision regarding which product can best suit their needs.  Digging through this alternatives I noticed one similarity – I’ve used most of these products.  Sure, I haven’t used TapouT’s brand, but creatine, glutamine, protein, I’ve used them all, and so have most of the fighters I know and train with.  The brand known and respected by fighters worldwide appears to not really know the needs of fighters at all.  Protein isn’t exactly going to help you dominate your next fight, and one can hardly justify paying exorbitant pricing when protein, creatine, and glutamine can easily be purchased at the local drug store for a fraction of the price.  Plus, most of the TapouT’s products are in shake form, which has long been a complaint of fighters who dislike training on a full stomach, myself included.  At this point, the market needs more definition as to why a serious athlete should spend their money on Tapout’s ‘fighter specific’ line of products.  For me, I’m sticking with fighter specific products, which are better suited and dosed to my specific training program.  After all, I’m a fighter, not a TapouT disciple who will buy anything they slap their label onto.  I’ll keep my TapouT loyalty with my one six year old TapouT shirt that I own, for this line is far removed from what a true fighter needs to compete.  TapouT has been a blessing to our sport, so I wish them success.  However, I expect them to set an example for other companies to follow.  The example here: excessive greed.

Getting Sports Nutrition To Keep Hydrated

Getting Sports Nutrition To Keep Hydrated

What keeps a triathlon athlete going in spite of the heat and long hours of vigorous physical activity is a properly hydrated and fueled body. In endurance sports, nutrition is equivalent to keeping oneself hydrated at all times, especially during the game. If you don’t give yourself the proper nutrition it needs, your game performance will suffer.

Sports that require special attention to endurance nutrition (and thus help you level up your performance) are: running, swimming, triathlon, cycling, rowing, mountain biking, adventure racing, cross-country skiing, mountaineering and trekking.

Let us say that you have prepared yourself for an endurance sport. Your nutrition focuses on giving you enough fuel to last you a day of vigorous physical activity. You eat foods rich in protein to keep your muscles fit for the game and carbohydrates to give you enough energy and fuel your muscles to run fast, steady, and consistently. What else can you do to perform much better in endurance sports?

Here are some endurance sports nutrition suggested by athletes and trainers:

Endurance Sports Nutrition Tip – Hydrate Yourself

1. Start the day with a full tank of water.

Athletes don’t eat during a game. But they do drink water. Studies show, of which common people now know, that humans can last a month without eating but will die immediately without water for 3 days to one week. That is how important water is to our body.

Many people die of diarrhea because of dehydration. Hydration is an important nutrition component to humans, most especially to athletes involved in endurance sports. So the endurance sports nutrition tip from athletes and trainers: drink lots of water before the game.

Hydration is the key to winning endurance sports competition. And drinking water before the game starts puts you in a great headstart.

2. Hydrate yourself regularly during the game.

Drink often during the game. Most endurance sports nutrition guide books will tell you the same thing. Athletes in endurance sports sweat off two quarts of water per hour especially in hot and humid weather. So, you must drink at least four up to eight ounces of water every fifteen to twenty minutes. Sports drink may also replace water.

Here’s some tip that endurance sports nutrition guide books may not have told you: to know when it is time to gulp on your water or sports drink bottle, set your timer to alarm every 15 or 20 minutes within 24 hours.

Freeze your drinking bottles and then pack them up in insulated foams to keep it cool. Even if you don’t sweat still do gulp down the liquid in your drinking bottle. You may not know it and may not notice it but you may have sweat more than you think of.

3. Pack up extra bottles.

Carry more drinking bottles if you can. Don’t be afraid to look like a camel with extra hump at your back. You need all those liquids in your endurance sport. It will keep you going and in shape.

Besides, you will drain these drinking bottles one at a time every 15 or 20 minutes. At that rate, you may not even know that your endurance sports drinks have been drained down your esophageal pipes.

Endurance sport nutrition question: Water or sports drink?

In endurance sports nutrition, it has debated whether water or sports drink should be consumed by an athlete competing in endurance sports.

Researches have shown that endurance sports athletes (competing under the sweltering heat of the sun) who were provided with water as a means of hydrating themselves replace only one and half to two thirds of fluid loss, while those who were given with sports drink have shown hydration nearly to a hundred percent.

The reason for this is that sports drink contains electrolytes (sodium, potassium and magnesium) which help retain fluid in the body and balance the presence of these minerals that are vital in normal bodily function.

We lose electrolytes when we sweat. Dizziness, muscle cramps, extreme exhaustion, and irregular heartbeat are the symptoms of electrolytes loss in the body.

According to endurance nutrition experts, many athletes lose endurance due to low level of electrolytes. In fact, according to endurance sports nutrition magazines, some athletes even die due to electrolytes loss.
